Willie "Governor" Henderson was born on July 6, 1944, in Troy, Alabama, to the late Hellan Henderson and Rashon "Coot" Johnson. He was reared by the late Queen Johnson and spent his childhood and adult years in Coolidge, Georgia. Willie was part of a close-knit family of five, which included Fannie (Willie) Hamilton, the late Cherrie Brown, the late Hiawatha Johnson, and the late Ray Johnson, Jr.
At a young age, Willie joined Silver Hill Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board for more than twenty years. He also served as an usher and was instrumental in forming the Third Sunday Usher's Ministry. Deacon Henderson was extremely honored to serve as the Adult Sunday School Teacher for more than ten years. He also served faithfully with the Moultrie District Union as Secretary to the Parent Body, Laymen Advisor, and Secretary for the Benevolent Offering. He was loved and respected by the members of the Union and the Camilla Missionary Baptist Association, which he loved.
Deacon Henderson graduated from Magnolia High School Class of 1966, where he was a passionate, aggressive basketball player. He excelled on the court, which became a joyful outlet for him. He also served in the United States Army, participating in the Vietnam War. After dedicating 21 years to his military career, he retired in 1994.
Deacon Henderson was married to Sister Patricia A. Henderson for 55 years until his passing. Together, they were blessed with two children, who hold cherished memories of their father: Rogers W. Henderson, Sr. (Judy) of Dumfries, Virginia, and Yunat Henderson of Coolidge, Georgia. He is also survived by three grandchildren: Jaya Shelton of Smith Station, Alabama; Rogers Henderson, Jr. of Arlington, Virginia, and Merari K. Pritchett of Charlotte, North Carolina. Deacon Henderson is remembered by his sisters-in-law, Janice Scott of Durham, North Carolina, and Bernice Wilson of Thomasville, Georgia; his brother-in-law, Steve Wilson (Sharon); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and extended family.
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
