Obituary

On March 24, 1961, God blessed the late Elma Johnson, Sr. and the late Geraldine Cromartie Johnson with the birth of their daughter, Veronis Lorraine Johnson. Veronis was the fourth of five children born to Elma and Geraldine.

On Friday, October 2, 2026, Veronis entered eternal rest at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning her heavenly journey and answering the call to her eternal home. In her final moments, her devoted son, Jimmy Macklin, III, was close by her side.

At an early age, Veronis accepted Christ and became a member of Mercy Seat Christian Church. Throughout her youth and adult years, she faithfully shared her God-given gift of singing as a member of the church choir. Even after leaving the area, Veronis would lovingly return home and join the choir whenever she had the opportunity.

Veronis began her educational journey in the Thomasville City School System, where she attended elementary and secondary school. In 1979, she proudly graduated from Thomasville High School and continued her studies at Albany State College and Southwest Georgia Technical College.

Affectionately known as “Tweety” and “Bird” by her family and close friends, Veronis was a loving mother, devoted grandmother, cherished sister, and dear friend. She was a proud and dedicated mother to her beloved son, Jimmy Macklin, III, and a fiercely devoted grandmother to Jordyn Macklin and Jimmy Macklin, IV, affectionately known as “Quad.” She took great pride in each of their accomplishments, supported them through life’s challenges, and treasured every opportunity to celebrate their milestones. Veronis was especially delighted in caring for her grandchildren and showering them with unconditional love and affection. It was no secret that Jordyn and Jimmy, IV held a very special place in her heart. As their grandmother, Veronis was a source of strength, a safe place, a beautiful example of love, and a treasured blessing.

Veronis enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures. She loved fishing, relaxing at the beach, traveling with her son, grandchildren, and siblings, trying her luck at gaming, caring for her many plants, and quilting. Most of all, she cherished time spent with her family.

Veronis will be remembered for her strong personality, honesty, and compassion. She was a woman who loved deeply and made an unforgettable impression upon those whose lives she touched. Her presence brought joy to her family and friends, and she will be fondly remembered for her laughter, strength of spirit, and the genuine care she showed to others.

Though Veronis has completed her earthly journey, her legacy will continue through the lives she touched. Her family and friends will forever hold dear the moments they shared with her and the lasting impact of her presence. The lessons she taught, the laughter she shared, and the love she gave will remain a treasured part of their lives.

Veronis leaves behind a lifetime of cherished memories in the hearts of those who loved her, including her beloved son Jimmy Macklin, III, of Lawrenceville, Georgia and his companion, Nyjai Hodge; her two grandchildren, Jordyn Macklin and Jimmy Macklin, IV (Quad), also of Lawrenceville, Georgia; her sisters, Cheryl Presha, Benolur Mason, Connie Virgil, and Carolyn Montgomery, all of Thomasville, Georgia, and April (Tony) Taylor of Attapulgus, Georgia; her brothers, Elma (Faye) Johnson, Jr. and Ricky (Carla) Ivey of Thomasville, Georgia, and Charlie (Nicky) Mack of North Carolina; her aunts, Mattie Brown of Washington, D.C. and Gloria Johnson of Thomasville, Georgia; her uncles, Otis Cromartie of Chicago, Illinois and Hayward (Georgia) Cromartie of Thomasville, Georgia; her former daughter-in-law and the mother of Jimmy Macklin, IV and Jordyn Macklin, Synethia Macklin; and a host of cousins, extended family members, and friends.

Veronis was preceded in death by her parents, Elma Johnson, Sr. and Geraldine Cromartie Johnson; her maternal grandparents, Allen and Mattie Cromartie; her paternal grandparents, Edward James and Pinkie Johnson; her maternal aunts and uncles: Maggie (James) Hopkins, Lizzie (Daniel) Taylor, Betty (Henry) Davis, Mary Louise (Willie) Johnson, Allen (Arteria) Cromartie, and Mae Joyce, wife of Otis Cromartie; paternal aunts and uncles: Helen Flanders, Martha Thomas, Charlie Johnson, and Edward James Johnson, Jr.; and a sister, Robin Davis.

Veronis’ earthly journey has ended, but her love, faith, laughter, and memories will live on through the generations she leaves behind. Her life was a gift, her love was a blessing, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
