Roger Lee Simmons, Jr., affectionately known as “RL”, was called home to be with the Lord on March 12, 2026. He was a proud father, grandfather, devoted brother, uncle, nephew, and a caring presence to his family and friends.
Roger was born on January 22, 1952, in Tallahassee, Florida, to the late Roger Lee Simmons, Sr. and Emma Brinson Simmons. He was one of four children born to this union. At an early age, while living in Merrillville, Georgia, Roger accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He later attended First Unity Missionary Baptist Church in Thomasville, Georgia, until his health began to decline.
Roger graduated from Central High School in Newark, New Jersey, where he distinguished himself as a talented athlete. His excellence on the basketball court earned him a scholarship to Rutgers University, where he pursued his bachelor’s degree and also played football; however, basketball was his true passion. Throughout his athletic career, he received numerous awards, trophies, and accolades in recognition of his skill and dedication. While living in New Jersey, Roger formed lifelong friendships that he cherished deeply before later returning to Merrillville to reunite with his family.
Roger worked for many years with Ideal Steel Erection, Inc. in Atlanta, Georgia. He was also skilled in roofing, construction, and a variety of other trades, working throughout Thomasville, Georgia, Tallahassee, Florida, and surrounding areas.
Roger was known for his kindness, generosity, and boundless love. He was the kind of person who would give you the clothes off his back—but you had better not touch his jewelry. His sense of humor, warm spirit, and loyalty left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Above all, his family—both immediate and extended—meant everything to him.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Roger Lee Simmons, Sr. and Emma Brinson Simmons.
He leaves to cherish his loving memory his son, Rodney Simmons (Shaykele) Virgil; his grandsons, Rodney Lee Virgil, Dominic Huntley, and Bryson Hay; his granddaughters, Heavenly Virgil, Roniah Virgil, and Lola Virgil; and his great-granddaughter, Nayori.
He is also survived by his brother, William Roy Simmons of Lake Wales, Florida (his wife, Bobbie Simmons, preceded him in death); and his sisters, Doris (Tony) James of Tallahassee, Florida, and Glinder (Nathaniel) Stephens of Orlando, Florida. The family also extends heartfelt appreciation to his dedicated nephew, Roy Rodney Simmons, and his loving and devoted friend, Linda Anderson, for their care and support.
Roger shared a special bond with his beloved dog, Jett, who was a constant companion and loyal sidekick. Many who knew Roger also knew Jett, whose unconditional love brought him great comfort and joy.
He also leaves to mourn and celebrate his life a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and dear friends who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
Though he is no longer with us, Roger’s love, laughter, and legacy will live on through all who were blessed to know him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
