Portia Farris McQueen was born on December 15, 1960, to Johnny and Agnes McQueen in Thomasville, Georgia. She was the second child of Johnny McQueen and the sixth child of Agnes. Portia's siblings included Onless (aka Johnny) McQueen: deceased; Emma Frazier Johnson, Lake City, Florida; Thomas J. Frazier, Pelham, Georgia; Carstean Frazier, Thomasville, Georgia; Bernice G. Frazier: whereabouts unknown; Daisy Frazier, deceased; Thomas Jones, Thomasville, Georgia.
Portia graduated as an honor student from Magnolia High School, Thomasville, Georgia in 1979. She was an avid reader, and she never missed a day of school. She attended Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida where she earned an MLS in Library Science. After graduation she accepted a job as a librarian at Florida State University. Portia served at the university library for more than 20 years. Subsequently, she accepted a job with Florida A&M University. She remained in her position at FAMU until her passing.
Portia loved her family. She was a caretaker for both immediate and extended family members. Portia was there when relatives and friends needed help. She cared for her mother until her mother's death in 2015. She also loved to cook. Many family members and friends have enjoyed her potato pies, turkey wings, corn bread, and her delicious potato salad.
Portia enjoyed singing. She was a member of the church choir. She was a devoted member of the Willow Head Missionary Church, Thomasville, Georgia. She also enjoyed travelling. Portia travelled with the Georgia Mass Choir; a group well known throughout this country. Her travel also included other countries such as Kenya in East Africa.
On Saturday, March 2, 2024, Portia Farris McQueen went to her eternal home. She will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved her. She leaves behind Emma Johnson, eldest sister; Thomas Frazier, brother; Carstean Frazier, sister; Eric McQueen, nephew; Thomas Jones, nephew and adopted brother; Xavier Glass, nephew; and a host of relatives and friends.
