Mattie Lee Massey Mitchell was born April 23, 1928 in Boston (Glasgow Community), Georgia to the late Mary (Goldie) Drew and Fred Anderson Massey. She was the youngest of two children. (Her sister, Ida Mae Massey Ross preceded her in death. She and her sister were reared by their grandparents, Obie and Ida
Drew in the Glasgow Community.
Mattie was educated in the Thomas County Public School System (New Union School). Although she did not achieve her educational goals, she had a life-long yearning for learning. She would often recite a poem she learned in elementary school – "The Clock of Time". She enjoyed reading and often shared what she read with others.
Mattie always had a desire to become a teacher but she realized that her grandparents were not financially able to send her to college. She met Marcus Lee Mitchell at a church revival. They married July 13, 1946. Eight children were born to this union.
Mattie was a homemaker while Marcus worked to provide for their growing family. She enjoyed cooking and providing tasty meals for her family and reading to her children. She also enjoyed meeting and talking with people. When her children grew up and became school age she worked in the cafeteria at New Union Elementary School and Chappel Elementary School.
Mattie was a Godly woman and believed in helping others. She would often say "Treat everyone as good as you know how and the Lord will bless you".
Mattie quietly passed away very peacefully Monday, February 3, 2025 at Camellia Gardens of Life Care in Thomasville, Georgia.
