Obituary

John Arthur Smith, born on January 21, 1946, was a treasured member of both his family and community who passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025, at Archbold Memorial Hospital. He entered his heavenly home early on Thanksgiving morning, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication that will be cherished by many.

John Arthur Smith, Sr. was born in Cairo, GA to Pecola (Fields) Smith and Alex Smith, Sr. He was the oldest out of the three siblings, Joanne Smith, Lee-Roy Smith and Alex Smith, Jr.

John served honorably in the United States Army's Infantry Division during the Vietnam War, earning the respect of his peers and a lasting gratitude from his country. His commitment to service extended beyond the battlefield; he was a dedicated member and Deacon of Evergreen Baptist Church, under the guidance of Reverend Ernest Scott.

John's life was filled with the steadfast love of his family. He married his forever sweetheart and life partner, Evelyn Smith, with whom he shared a full and vibrant life. Together, they welcomed five children into the world: John Smith, Jr., Mark Smith, Felicia (Ben) Morris, Levada Laing, and the late Beverly Smith, who preceded him in death. John was a proud grandfather, known affectionately as "PAPA" to 13 grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry his spirit forward in their lives.

He is also survived by his God-daughter, Carla (Charles) Moore, and a special caregiver, Tariche Smith, both of whom held a special place in his heart.

John leaves behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and faith, underscoring the impact he had on those fortunate enough to have known him. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, Pecola and Alex Smith, Sr., his siblings, Joanne and Alex, Jr., as well as his daughter, Beverly Smith, and his grandchildren, Andrea Morris and Jaushuah Laing.

John Arthur Smith will be remembered not only for his service to his country and church but also for his unwavering devotion to his family. He was a man full of grace and dignity, leaving behind a world that feels his absence deeply.
