Gladys Marcus Williams was born on May 13, 1929 in Mitchell County, GA to Mr. Simon Marcus and Mrs. Willie Randall Marcus. She was the youngest of ten children.
Gladys accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior at a very early age and was baptized. She joined St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church in 1942 at age 13. She received her early education through the Flint Community Schools and graduated from Rockdale High School, after which she attended Albany State College and Savannah State College. Gladys had a love for learning which spanned into a career in education. She was one of the first employees of the Head Start Program in Camilla, Georgia. In later years, Gladys became a para-professional at Mitchell County Elementary School retiring in August 1991. She worked many years after retirement as a substitute teacher at the Mitchell County Elementary School.
Gladys was one of the organizing members of the Volunteer Workers Club, whose mission was to provide outreach and service to the local community. Club members were often found visiting the residents of the Mitchell County Convalescent Center.
Gladys was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Tommie Williams, Sr. on March 14, 1952. To this union nine children were born.
As a faithful member of the St. Mary Missionary Baptist church for over 80 years, she served as a primary class Sunday School teacher; sang in the senior choir and assisted in the kitchen ministry for many decades. The COVID-19 global plague prevented her from attending regular worship service for a while, but as soon as she was able to return, she returned. Gladys loved the church and her church family and was blessed to attend for one final time on Sunday, November 27, 2022.
Gladys had a genuine love for plants and flowers. She would spend countless hours outside taking care of them. She was very protective of her flowers; during the summer she would rise early in the morning to water them. In the winter, she would gather and cover them to protect them from the cold temperatures.
On Wednesday November 30, 2022, she was welcomed into her eternal home. She leaves behind to cherish her memory five daughters: Belinda Smith of College Park, GA; Theresa Pinkins (Robert) of Decatur, GA; Katrenia Shivers of Albany, GA; Mary Tanner McCane (Kenneth) of Fayetteville, GA; and Joyce Andrews (Antonio) of Union City, GA; three sons: Tommy, Jr. of Hyattsville, MD; Clifton (Sally) of Colorado Springs, CO; and Henry Craig of Washington, DC; one sister, Oppie Lee Johnson of Pelham, GA; fourteen grand children; thirteen great-grandchildren; one great great grandchild, two sisters-in-law: Glennelle O. Marcus of Baconton, GA and Bessie L. Williams of New York, NY and a host of loving nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommie L. Williams, Sr; a son, Conrad "Mickey" Williams; her parents, Simon Marcus and Willie Randall Marcus; sisters: Gadie Bush, Corene Thompson, Jessie Lee; Mamie L. Williams, Gussie Marcus; brothers: Leon Marcus, Simon Marcus, Jr., and Clayton Marcus, Sr.
Momma, we love and thank you. You will be in our hearts forever as we continue to uphold your legacy.
