Emma Lou Thompson was born in Mitchell County, Georgia on August 9, 1934 to Nathaniel and Corene Thompson. She was the eldest of ten children. She confessed Christ at an early age and joined St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church. She received her formal education at Rockdale School graduating with the Class of 1953. She attended Albany State College majoring in Middle Grades Education. During her matriculation at ASC, she joined her beloved Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. to whom she remained a faithful member. She obtained her B.S. Degree from ASC in 1958 and pursued graduate courses in Library Science at Fort Valley State College and Atlanta University. She entered her teaching career in the Mitchell County School System where she dedicated her life to educating and cultivating the minds of her students for 34 years. She is most fondly remembered for her years of service as the librarian.
Emma Lou was a faithful member of St. Mary Missionary Baptist Church where she worked in several capacities. She held positions as Church Clerk, Youth Director and a member of the Mother Board. She worked fervently with St. Mary's missionary work, the Camilla Missionary Baptist Association, the GMBC 2nd District Congress of Christian Education, and was a NAACP Lifetime Member. Emma Lou has been a beacon of light for her family, church family, friends, sorority sisters, coworkers and students.
On Tuesday, January 4, 2022, Emma Lou was welcomed into her eternal rest. She will be loved and cherished forever by her only child, Jerolyn Thompson Hines; Her grandchildren: Jocelyn Hines Florence, James Hines, Jere' Hines Parks and Jerlesia Hines. Her great-grandchildren, D'Nea Brinay Florence, Emmaya Jere' Parks, Orientheus Prez' Parks Jr., and Bethany Maryah Parks. A grandson in-law Orientheus "Panama" Parks. Her siblings Nathaniel Thompson Jr., Annette Evans, Horace Thompson, Larry Thompson and Freddie Thompson. Two sisters in laws, Patrica Thompson and Bernita Thompson, three aunts; Oppie Johnson, Gladys Williams and Glennelle Marcus, and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
